Uluwehi is inspired by plants found in the back yard and is a lei wili papa, a style of lei making where the decorative material is lashed to a center cord with a wrapping technique, often used to make lei pāpale, or lei poʻo. Lei is a symbol of aloha and giving lei is an extension of aloha. It can be given as a symbol of love, friendship, to celebrate, or even honor someone. Not all lei is store bought - this is a celebration of making lei with the resources available to us. This lei integrates indigenous plants like pōhinahina and palapalai, endemic plants like liko lehua, and other foliage found in our back yard. ʻIlima kū kahakai, shoreline ʻilima, Oʻahu’s island flower, sida fallax is indigenous to Hawaiʻi and can be found thriving on Hawaiʻi’s shorelines in varying weather conditions. Lei made of ʻilima was seen as lei for royalty, but is now a very special lei gifted for extremely special occasions. ʻIlima is associated with the goddess of hula, Laka, and is a kinolau (earthly form) of the god Kāne.

Pīkake is the Hawaiian name for  Jasminum sambac, one of about a dozen Jasminum species grown in Hawaiʻi. The name is adapted from the word “peacock,” because Princess Kaʻiulani was fond of both this flower and the bird.

Lei Kalaunu is inspired by a style of lei making called lei kui poepoe where the decorative material is strung in a circular pattern. Lei is a symbol of aloha and giving lei is an extension of aloha. It can be given as a symbol of love, friendship, to celebrate, or even honor someone.

This lei is strung with puakalaunu. Although both flowers are not native to Hawaiʻi, they are local favorites and were said to be the favorite flower of Queen Lili’uokalani as it was thought to resemble the royal crown.
